Cool to see you have some active writers here. Shame this thread seems to have gone quiet in recent months. I'll maybe post something of my own here in a bit.

In real life, I'm a Christian, husband, father, writer, singer, occasional actor and all-round geek.

Please consider visiting my blog, my two web fiction series, SHADOW and Murkland and my Soundcloud (for some smooth acapella covers).

Random short I wrote in work once...

The Yellow Laptop

Once upon a time there was a yellow laptop. It was left, abandoned on the metro between Oberon and Titania stations on the evening of the Elfin Rapture, still running the software which had started it all. It went round the Faerie metro loop seven hundred and seventy-seven times before it was eventually found by the Hacker, to be taken to the Server Vault and sealed away until the time the Elves return, when they will retake Faerie and bring an end to this Dark Age.

At least, that’s what all the legends used to say. Actually, the legends said that the laptop was gold and that its circuit boards were printed with mithril, but I doubted that more than any other detail, so I edited it a bit. Yellow seemed more likely. I heard that the Elves liked yellow, so why not?

In truth, I never really believed any of the legends. Sure the ruins of the city of Faerie still stand, so there’s no doubt in my mind that the Elves actually existed, but it takes a lot more faith than I have to believe that they were taken away digitally to save themselves from destruction and that, one day, they might return. I’m much more inclined to believe that they were just destroyed. I mean, why make up something more complicated just to give hope? It doesn’t make any sense!

This is the kind of thing I usually end up arguing about with my brother. He’s a devout Hoper, spends most of his time at the Digital Sanctuary down at the corner of Dungeon and Main, offering up data prayers to the Elves, waiting for them to return. They even have ties to some organisation down in the wastes near Faerie, looking for evidence of the Server Vault in the hopes that they might be able to speed the process up a bit. It’s all a waste of time and money, if you ask me, but Galvith, he keeps telling me that it’s only people like him who are keeping hope alive these days.

Okay, sure, they do do a lot of good. They run a soup kitchen for half-breeds down under the Troll bridge and there’s a hostel in Little Asgard for the Touched and Shadow-blind, and it’s not like I think that those are bad things to be doing, or anything, but do you really have to believe in the return of the Elves to do all that? I don’t think the fact that nobody else is means anything either, I mean, we all have our own shit, don’t we? We’ve all got to deal with our own problems.

Case in point: Galvith separated from his wife to join the Hopers. Okay, so she left him, but it was because he was spending so much time there. I heard some of the arguments and they weren’t pretty. Galvith held his own pretty well, but in the end she said it was the Hopers or her. He made his choice.

And where does that leave him? He had to move back in with me, for Server’s sake! And now he spends his time telling me that I should come along to their meetings – that I might just find what I’m looking for. Like his no-hope Hopers know anything about what I’m looking for! I mean, they couldn’t even begin to comprehend the place I’m in right now. Do they have to worry about where their next fix is coming from, of if they’ll get enough to survive the week? Do they have to worry about Troll thugs hunting them in the street? Do they have to worry about getting enough gold together just to keep them off my back, or the nightmares I have about Aracknives coming for me in the night when I don’t pay?

Okay, so I have my issues, but that’s exactly what I’m talking about. There’s too much reality going on in life to spend time hoping after some fantasy! I’m likely to be murdered if I don’t have enough gold for my next few ounces of StarAsh, but then I don’t get those few ounces I’m dead anyway – I’ll just burn up and probably take the whole tenement with me. And yea, I know what you’re thinking: why start on the stuff in the first place, but you don’t know my neighbourhood. I’d have been beaten to a pulp if I hadn’t tried some that night in Haaver’s basement.

What? Galvith? Of course we grew up in the same neighbourhood We’re brothers aren’t we?

Well, the reason why he wasn’t there that night was because he chose not to be. He was involved with the Hopers even then. Our mother had a connection with them for a while and he guess he followed along a few times before she died. Anyway, he said that StarAsh dulls the mind and takes away from true Hope, or something like that. He did get beaten up the next day. Point made, I think.

So, where was I? Oh, yeah, reality. You have to face reality at some point, whether you like it or not. You can’t just keep holding on to Faerie tales, hoping that everything’s going to be better one day. The Elves died. Life sucks. That’s it. The Hopers will have to face it too one day. Oh, sure, they’ll tell you that just because they haven’t found the Server Vault yet doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, but, seriously, you can only blame so much on Armorc raids and sentient sandstorms. And don’t get me started on their supposed ping data. I’ve heard Galvith talk about it and it’s just nonsense. How are we to say whether the ping data they’ve got means anything at all? It could be a glitch in their system of they could be pinging the intranet setup in the brothel next door for all they know, but no, their ping data supposedly proves the Elves are all digitally stored in some Data Haven buried somewhere beneath Faerie, just waiting to be reloaded on that ‘golden’ laptop in the Server Vault. Yeah, right!

What? If they did turn up one day? Well, I guess I’d be as pleased as the Hopers, wouldn’t I? And if they really are there in some kind of digital sleep, they aren’t going to care that I wasn’t the one pinging them with data prayers, are they?

Yeah, thought not.

This is supposed to be the lyrics of my song. I was planning to be a country guitarist/singer like Parker Milsap and Shawn James. But, things change, I guess. Anyway, here are the lyrics that I found from an old word document.

Oh, ancient one. Oh, ancient one.
Why let me stray the trail? You promised goodness but what I see is, to no avail.
A tale of beauty wonder and a lane of much to gain.
That's what the Ustadz tell me but turns out it's all a game.

...

Oh, ancient one. Oh, ancient one.
Why let me have the choice? You promised clarity but what I see is just chaos.
Guidance in its entirety, just follow me.
That's what the Ustadz say, before they backstabbed me.

...

Oh, ancient one. Oh, ancient sun. Oh, ancient god. Oh, ancient tons.
Where did you go?
Come down here and I'll punch you, like no tomorrow.

...

I, myself, has kind of forgotten how I would've performed it. And I barely revised it. So, sorry if it seemed a little odd.
