NationStates Region Surpasses 450 Nations!

The NationStates Region has surpassed 450 Nations for the first time since June 8, 2013. For the first two months of 2015 our Region vacillated between 368 and 374 Nations with a high of 382. Since the onset of March we have witnessed a 22% increase in recruitment due in part to advertisement on Reddit etc. If must be stated that my initial response to this increase was startling as we have become more vigilant after the raid on Texas. Moreover, Daylight Savings Time has moved our update times later in the night affecting the sleep of our esteemed Delegate. Nevertheless, the increase in population is most agreeable.

In the World Assembly we have been amenable to the majority supporting 8 of 10 Resolutions and 5 of 7 Repeals. The Security Council, however, continues its ridiculousness passing 4 of 5 Commend/ Condemn and refusing to repeal three Liberation atrocities. We remain staunchly against this despicable institution.

Lastly, NationStates added two more embassies this season with “The Coalition of Democratic Nations” and the “Glorious Nations of Iwaku” bringing our total to 20.

NationStates Region: Mikeswill Celebrates 11 Years as WA Delegate

Mikeswill was created on October 29, 2003 after receiving an e-mail from his second cousin who new Mike had an interest in political simulations. Beginning in The West Pacific, he adopted the Albanian flag and the motto, “The Buck Stops Here”. In the meantime Mike’s friend, Maiway joined the game and was enticed to join the NationStates Region by The Aire of McQuillan, a most pleasing player who flew the flag of Qatar. In turn Maiway asked Mikeswill to join NationStates region as the 21st Nation. At the time Imagineering (an engineer with Disney) was serving as the UN Delegate.

By the first week of November Mikeswill had created the puppet Mikes Hope to serve as his WA Nation. Mikes Hope, flying the Bosnian flag, began recruiting passionately and on November 12, 2003 he was elected UN Delegate. Quickly we grew. On November 19th we hit 105 Nations; 231 Nations on December 5th; 456 Nations on December 27th; 524 Nations on January 2, 2004; 603 Nations on January 13th; and a high of 647 Nations on January 27th. At this time NationStates was the largest Player Created Region in the Jennifer Government World. The reason Mikes Hope continued to serve the Region as Delegate is that he was the Nation most responsible for recruitment into this Region and Nations seemed to want to reward him with their Endorsement.

By September of 2004 our Region had contracted to 321 Nations in part due to the cyclical nature of the game and in part due our split into two regions to include NationStates 2. Meanwhile, Mikeswill had created numerous puppets across the game to keep tabs on potential invaders. For most of the year these puppets returned valuable information. However, on September 11, 2004, two such puppets apparently crossed the line of gamemanship in the minds of the Moderators and were thus deleted from the game along with Mikes Hope . Mikeswill was spared.

A power struggle ensued with one faction supporting Insomnia Monkeys, the newly elected Delegate, and others supporting Mikeswill. Ten days later Mikeswill became the new delegate while the dissenting faction moved to the newly created Free States of Gaia Region. On or about September 24, 2004 a computer glitch recalibrated all Delegates dates of service to zero. Nevertheless, Mikeswill’s recruitment efforts revitalized our Region anew surpassing 400 Nations on October 17th; 500 on December 18th; and 600 on February 13, 2005. Again, Mikeswill was rewarded with continued support as UN Delegate by the Nations he recruited into this Region.

Over the years much has changed and much has stated the same. Our regional population took a hit in the Fall of 2005 when Mikeswill’s career changed thereby limiting his time on line. In 2009 Mikeswill lost his mother which impacted his game play and in 2010 the cousin that set him on the game also died. Last year one of our original members who made the move to Free States of Gaia but always kept things civil, Ormrod died. These things happen as life passes.

For most years Mikeswill individually recruited every Nation that entered the game. When that changed and recruitment became automated we too had to change. At present Mikeswill spends his own money to pay for the stamps which results in approximately ½% of recruited Nations entering the region. And yet we currently rank 16th overall and 7th in player created regions. More importantly we remain the largest Founderless and Neutral player created region.

And so another year has come and gone. I want every Nation to know that I value each one of you and thank you for the efforts large or small that you undertake to choose to remain in this Region. We are different than most and not for everyone and yet I can always rely on your support when someone tries to upset our community.

Thank you,

Mike

2015 NationStates Population

2015 marked a year of sustained growth in NationStates. Beginning the year with 368 Nations, we ended the year at 551 a net gain of 50%. Whilst 2014 was a year of constantly maintaining a population base in the 300’s (given the systematic automation of recruitment which has flooded the game with a plethora of Regions all trying to recruit the same newbies), Mikeswill was able to break apart from the herd. In April we surpassed 500 Nations for the first time since April of 2013.

We maintained the 500 mark through June 20th and weathered the summer swoon into the 400’s until returning to the 500 mark in late August. November 22nd was our zenith as we hit 583 Nations. Most outstanding was ending the year with over 500 Nations, an accomplishment achieved only once in the history of the Region (2004)!

Population History of NationStates Region:*

Year: HIGH - LOW

2015: 583 - 357
2014: 389 - 318
2013: 543 - 350
2012: 414 - 192
2011: 161 - 109
2010: 221 - 106
2009: 173 - _69
2008: 327 - 121
2007: 272 - 136
2006: 358 - 107
2005: 644 - 351
2004: 647 - 309
2003: 456 - __2

2015 Year in Review ~ NationStates Region, The World Assembly, and The Security Council
In 2015 there were 37 new resolutions in the World Assembly in which the Delegate voted on 35. Of these 35 votes, 28 or 80% of time the vote agreed with the majority whereas 7 or 20% of the time the vote was with the minority. As such, the NationStates Region tends to vote with the majority on practical resolutions yet remain a minority voice on legislation we find meritless. Additionally, there were 32 Repeal Resolutions in the World Assembly in 2015. Of these repeal votes 25 or 78% of time the vote agreed with the majority.

The Commend/Condemn silliness of the Security Council continued in 2015. There were 15 Commend attempts of which 4 were defeated and 11 were passed. Given our Anti-Security Council stance NationStates voted Against all 15 resolutions. We also voted for the 5 Commend Repeals with 4 passing. The Condemn vote in the Security Council was 4-6 with NationStates voted against all 10. Additionally, we voted for all 4 repeals of which only one was successful.

The most ridiculous and dangerous power of the Security Council is the Liberation provision. In 2015 4 Regions were subject to Liberation votes with 2 falling to the recklessness of the Council. Alas, only one these Liberation Resolutions were eventually Repealed but more as a ploy rather than due to the illegitimate and manipulative nature of this abuse of power. Typically, NationStates Region voted against all 4 Liberation votes and for all 4 Liberation Repeals.

We continue to stand against Liberations as merely a means to take over control of a Region or to usurp the game power of the freely elected Delegate. Our own region was subject to such manipulation of the rules whereby our 11 years of stability was shaken were it not for some gracious support by the Jennifer Government community.
