Ethereal Stories: The Celestial Lands
The old man sat down on the Arabian-style pouf and opened a tall faded rectangular container with the word "ADVENTURER" written on it. He had just grabbed it from its shelf, a shelf labeled as "Story-Telling". He hummed to himself as he flipped through dusty scrolls that became cleaner and newer as he pulled them out. He finally reached one which was written around fifteen years ago.
"Ah, let's see. Theddeus Frost. His name was never really meant to have any meaning- but let's take a closer look, shall we? Thaddeus- with an a, means friend, which easily fits with his personality- he's an excellent friend. Deus, however, means god. Now, he's no special snowflake, but he was- still IS pretty good with non-wand magic, and has mastered non-verbal magic as well. As for Frost, he's an excellent user of ice magic, descended from a long line of ice magic users. Now, let's start the story. This was written by a person close to him." he coughed, adjusted his spectacles, and started reading. "In his world, Luna Regnum (The Celestial Lands), there's a family for each type of magic and, well- fate decided for him to be in the House of Ice. This man- Deus, we'll call him, for short- stared at the wand in his hands. It was made of fine aspen, with a core of.. Angel Blood, was it? No- No, I think it was a core of lightning- Yes, lightning. It was exceptionally long- 15 inches. The wand was surprisingly swishy. He had held this wand and used it for the past 15 years, although it took a while to form a connection with it. And let me tell you, after mastering it, not once had it let him down- not in duels, not in everyday work and not even in championships, once he had trained sufficiently. He suffered terrible injuries at first, though, poor lad!"
The man paused, turning his face to a boy in his teenager years who had raised his hand. "Yes?" He said, once again adjusting his glasses. The boy stood up, rubbing his neck as some other boys and girls of his age looked at him. "What's the Luna Regnum, Lord Do- I mean, Grandfather?" The old man took a deep breath, closing his eyes. "A far away realm, one.. destroyed." It seemed to pain him to say so. "It had one sun and three moons, and not all creatures on it were human or animal or bird." The boy nodded and sat down. 'Grandfather' blinked, holding the delicate scroll in his rough hands. He paused for some time, staring at the words then took his breath and continued reading.
"This 28 year old man's face and physique said all you needed to know about him. He was a of a slightly muscular build, with long raven hair drawn back into a ponytail, though he preferred much more keep his hair under the fine hood of a sapphire-color cloak. His light blue eyes had a sort of determined look in them, at all times, which surely showed he would not give up, no matter what. They also had a careful- watchful, even, glint about them. They had some bags under them. His nose and lips were slightly big. There was a sort of atmosphere to him, about how he had his fists clenched at all times, his boots never really in full friction with the ground. It was as if he wanted to get up and fight someone! Or the straightness of his back-- It made you feel that you were in the presence of a warrior, or one who had gone through a battle with a hundred dragons, unscathed.
Unfortunately, this impressive young thaumaturge had some flaws, for he was quick to anger. He could be laughing at one point, then suddenly, he would be up and about, yelling in rage if someone had insulted him. He could be found getting in serious fights after a few insults which usually shouldn't make one even shift uncomfortably. His second flaw- well, not flaw.. problem, was that he had case of depression. He believed that it was because he had no partner or lover. He delt with it through battling monsters and evil men to find 'true justice and satisfaction'. He was only wellknown in the land he was born in.
But, when it wasn't one of those unfortunate drunken nights- Deus would read. He was normally an intelligent man- one who thought things out before doing them. He was the local wizard of a small mundane street in Gypte-- well, at the time of writing this, and was known for being extremely careful who he sold potions or amulets to, and what offers to steer clear of. This gave him a good reputation, and for such he was trusted with managing the portals in Icaro, but at the same time, mundanes always had suspicions: Why did some people go in but never go out? Why did dark-looking men and women come out with strange amulets? Was this man part of a cult? And so he always moved, and stayed for no more than a few months in each location, although he was thinking of moving to a town for magical and curious creatures only, located somewhere near the City of Caelum, after ending current matters and giving up Portal Supervision. He was also an honest man- a good trait that gave him an even better reputation. Deus always sold things for the right price, and was never one to lie about how much he had, or what he did, or who he was. This is, of course, excluding mundies, as he had to lie. Now that we know him, we can finally ask what in the Heavens he's doing. At the moment, he's somewhere out there awaiting for his portal to Rodoul, as he was requested to specially go there, where he would be escorted to the Moon Governmental Building to help with a court case that he had gotten himself stuck in. Sadly, the accused was his fiancée, and he'd have to weasel him out of a crime she was framed for.
However, that is a story for another day, I suppose we'll have to keep a close eye on this man."
The old man rolled up the scroll and left it on the table next to him. "Off you go now, children." The teenagers left to attend to their different jobs and occupations, chatting about the interesting introduction and how long the story would be. 'Grandfather' sat down in his chair for some time, staring into space. He rested for some time then went to attend to his Armor & Weapons shop, although he was not as enthusiastic for it as usual.
The Elder closed his eyes, remembering the past. Long ago, Luna Regnum was a giant powerhouse for other realms. All the trade happened there-- all the gold was there-- all of the Bohemians were there. Then they came.
The- The Ineffable. They were too complex in physical terms to explain. A strange mix between a human-sized hydra and an orc, with fur as well. They tood 7 feet tall, bending forward very slightly. Long claws protruded from one hand while the other seemed to be made to hold weaponry. They really seemed like a sickening version of a student mage's disaster project-- essentially ineffable. Too great to be described with words. They destroyed the villages. Eventually, news came of an entire city destroyed. And a war started that simply-- no scrolls, no signatures.
'Grandfather' began to recall the stories of heroes he had heard. And with a painful thought, he remembered how Theddeus had died. His eyes began to sting.
