A curious and deeply disappointing thing occurred last night in the IRC #osi channel during the update. Some members were engaged in word play, changing words around in a common sentence, which ended tragically when a senior member posted a link to a similar example, except this one was filled with a deeply offensive racial slur, the 'n' word was everywhere, multiple times, as if it were humourous. It was, literally, exactly the sort of 'joke' that a NAZI might be expected to post and when I pointed this out to the member, rather than receive a contrite, reflective and obviously necessary apology, I was asked to go and kill myself. Rather than admit what I had initially assumed to be a thoughtless mistake, something we are all capable of from time to time, the offender 'doubled down' on their position and I was informed that it was I who was rude.

This is not at all what I expected from this region and I fear something is misunderstood somewhere, so I have a few questions:

1. Is this a racist tolerant region?
2. Can I expect to see such links and posts made here in OFO?
3. Is the IRC #osi channel an informal space where such conduct is sanctioned?
4. How do others feel about racism in Osiris including #osi?
5. What, if anything, should we expect to see done about last night's event and any future such bigotry?

I feel that this is an important issue or else I wouldn't have brought it up. I recognise that this is an emotionally charged issue as well. I want to instruct everyone responding to please keep your passions in check and post with a cool head or not at all. All thoughts are welcome in this thread, abuse is not.

That sounds pretty disappointing. Racism shouldn't be tolerated although I don't know the specifics.

This is taken out of context completely actually. I'll post logs later but Koth and I were messing around with sentences in chat and then Koth posted an image of a spam game where you replaced one of the words of the above poster's sentence. Anyways the game went awry and ended up saying the N word a bunch of times. Koth didn't discriminate or attack anyone of any sort and Tush immediately called him a NAZI. Naturally Koth didn't take kindly to that.

I don't really care about racism. Even though it shouldn't be in society, I don't really care. I don't find it insulting. Being black, i personally dont find it insulting but rather humorous when someone is racist to me. But i dont not account for any people in the Region that are of a different race. And I agree with you Tush and Rach. It don't belong in a respectable region as this or any for a matter of fact

But it might have been a joke as Venico said not directed at anyone. That might be ok

As channel owner and the most senior of operators, I won't tolerate someone being discriminated against or abused based on their race or their beliefs. Discussions are fine, like a religious one would be ok if it was constructed and was actually seeking to learn from each other. But discrimination and attacks based on these things aren't ok. They won't be tolerated and they haven't been tolerated.

On a side note, if you truly feel a link or a person's comments are crossing a line, log it and send them to the channel owner (me). I'll have you file a report and it'll be taken into consideration.

Does this include in their absence? Does it include groups? You appear to be defending it. Perhaps I am still misunderstanding.

Also, thank-you for providing the log. Next time I will try to remember to record it myself for everyone's ease. If I had called the member a NAZI I would want to apologise. I think the evidence clearly shows that I did not, but pointed out that it was the type of offensive post expected from one, just as I stated at the outset. My goal was and remains to warn off of such callous conduct. I assume that noone here wants to be mistaken for a racist.

I don't think this should be about assigning blame though. I think it should be about understanding acceptable conduct. If I have mistaken and this is expected behaviour, I should like to know the parameters.

The mention of a racial slur doesn't immediately make someone racist. Linking to an image where the slur exists definitely doesn't make someone racist. If I linked to an Eddie Murphie stand up bit where he says "Nigger" would I then be called a racist NAZI also? There was no malicious content posted and no malicious intent by anyone involved. Koth didn't say "Wow italian people are the worst." He didn't attack anyone, any group, present or absent.

I would say you are definitely misunderstanding and don't quite know what racist means. Or how offensive it is to imply someone is a NAZI.
