Lashanugi, God of Coral Reefs.
Alternate World Origin: China (from Lǎo Shānhú Guī, 'Old Coral Turtle'), spread to India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Egypt under different names.
Symbol: A coral branch
Known as the 'Ancestor of Turtles', it was born from a belief that Tortoises became Turtles by consuming coral. It was said that the coral growing on its back could be turned into a medicine that granted the ability to breathe underwater. Lashanugi was said to curse those who bring harm to coral reefs with rapid ageing and back problems. In modern times, it has become a symbol of the environmentalist movement for the preservation of coral reefs, cartoon versions of it becoming common on brand products made from recycled plastic taken from the ocean.
Lashanugi was acknowledged by the court of the Jade Emperor, but was not held in high esteem there. It was far more connected with the Dragon Gods, and indeed Sun Wukong learned the location of the Eastern Dragon King's palace from Lashanugi, taking and eating a piece of coral from its back in order to travel there safely. Lashanugi has since been terrified of monkeys.
