[Passed] Nomination of Syberis to the Council of Guardians

Post by Cormac »

The office of the Pharaoh nominates, for the approval of the Council of Scribes, Syberis to serve on the Council of Guardians.

Syberis really needs no introduction. He has been serving actively as Vizier of Foreign Affairs, has in the recent past served as Chief Scribe, and has, as a Deputy Scribe, largely been fulfilling the role of Chief Scribe since our last election for that office concluded on September 29. His dedication to Osiris is unquestionable, his level of activity is exemplary, and there is no doubt that he will be a significant asset to the Council of Guardians. He would have been nominated earlier if not for his active involvement in raiding, which required him to be WA mobile, but he has indicated that he is ready and eager to step into this role and commit to being WA immobile as a Guardian of Osiris.

This nomination is independent of the request to remove Gradea from the Council of Guardians, as Syberis would make a strong addition to the Council of Guardians without regard to Gradea's status.

Will Syberis be willing to remove his gameplay commitments to fulfill this office?

Nay. because he has commitments to a few other regions and i fell as though this will just give power to use osiris for what ever his other regions need.

Please tell me how Syberis would do this, and what regions he participates in that would like to see themselves gain power while exploiting Osiris.

I highly doubt this.

Nothing in the Scroll of Ma'at nor the rules and procedures of the Council of Guardians prohibits a Guardian from being involved in other regions and organizations, so long as their WA remains in Osiris. Indeed there are restrictions on the other offices Guardians may hold within Osiris, but apart from that they are afforded the same freedom of engagement as you, and I, and every other citizen. This would constitute a rather unique demand for a prospective Guardian, one that I cannot recall being made for any previous candidate.

In the history of legislatures, whether in real life or in NationStates, that has never been how they've worked. Sorry. Everyone has been civil, but if you're expressing a point of view in the legislature, other citizens have the right to raise questions about what you're saying or express their own point of view in contrast to yours. That's how legislative discussion and debate works.

Syberis' involvement elsewhere is no more an impediment to his service as a Guardian of Osiris than my involvement in The East Pacific is an impediment to my service as Pharaoh of Osiris. Syberis has more than demonstrated his commitment to this region, as well as the other regions in which he is involved, and he has never given us cause to be concerned that he would abuse his position here for the benefit of some other region or that he would abuse his position elsewhere for our benefit. He has shown for months that he knows how and where to draw the line in that regard.

I will agree with you that conflicts of interest are something we should always take into account, but fortunately, in Syberis' case, we have months of evidence to suggest that he knows how to appropriately handle the differing interests of the regions in which he is involved.

All things considered, I don't know of any reasons to outright deny making him a guardian, so my vote is in favor of this movement.
