Equinox was the first well known region to establish a Guild System. Many other regions has similar systems in place again while not exactly the same are similar, e.g. Albion's cities (Shalefields, Brightwall, etc)
Guilds are somewhat one part political parties, one part semi-autonomous governments, and one part culture.
Originally, Guilds were static and set to specific jobs such as judiciary. Eventually this system didn't work out so well and was replaced. Anyone could form a guild should they meet the min. membership requirements like many political parties. Guilds, could have their own military independent from the region. Equinox as a region has remained staunchly neutral with Military Gameplay, in order to avoid conflicts within itself and other regions.
Within EQ's legislature all Guilds could appoint a Senator, and a few remaining seats left weren't Guild specific and elected at large by the citizens.
Some historic Guilds of that era include:
The Axiom Guild (Primarily led by Hadisthe and Joshua/Jedi-Gangsters. Known for the Defender group The Crusaders of Justice)
The Lords Guild (Primarily led by Morrenstien, Island Union, Aequitas-Veritas, and KevinWasserman)
The Mafia Guild (Primarily led by Asylum, formerly Island Union. Was the premier raiding Guild)
The Jethnea Guild (Primarily led by Pope Lexus X, Drop Your Pants, Earth22)
The Jolly Roger School for Swashbuckling & Ninjitsu (Primarily led by Aisli, Griff)
The Guild of Doom (Primarily led by Hospitlar, Mekhet, Fortana, everyone else in the Guild. Leader rotated every two weeks)
May be missing some information, but it happens.
The Guild System has changed from it's second era version, I will post more info about that when it's all set in stone.
Currently, we have three historic Guilds reborn;
Lords, Mafia, and Guild of Doom. (Led by KevinWasserman, Asylum, and Mekhet in order)
A fourth new Guild named The Capital is run by Sopo.
