Repeal "Prevention of Torture"
A resolution to repeal previously passed legislation.
Category: Repeal
Resolution: GA#9
Proposed by: Grey Earth
Description: WA General Assembly Resolution #9: Prevention of Torture (Category: Human Rights; Strength: Strong) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.
Argument: ACKNOWLEDGING that torture can be used as an effective means of receiving information from the individual(s) subject to the torture;
UNDERSTANDING that torture, as defined in GAR#9, violates basic human rights;
REMINDING that those aforementioned rights are a privilege earned by respecting the rights of others;
FURTHER REMINDING that those rights may be taken away from those who take the rights of others;
FURTHER REMINDING that information obtained by torture is rendered useless if it is not allowed to be used in legal proceedings as is forbidden by GAR#9;
RECOGNIZING that those subject to torture have/may have information vital to the capture and/or containment of criminals and/or military enemies;
REALIZING that torture is used as a tool for information attainment rather than punishment;
HOPING that the value of torture to the justice system and the military is seen by the populous;
HEREBY repeals GAR #9 “Prevention of Torture”
Considering that the author did not bring this to the floor himself, and that torture is an abhorrent practice shown time and time again not to produce reliable evidence I must be opposed to this measure.
