Osiris: Going Forward

Post by Severisen Montresor »

Good evening,

I come before you a simple player of a simple game. I joined NationStates in November of 2004.

Since then, I was delegate of a region with 50+ nations in it for over a year. It was a founderless region, and I kept the region invasion free for around 5 years through various roles. One of those roles was reaching out to people of the region and getting them to join the UN (and later WA) and endorse our delegate. In early 2012, my region was raided. Instead of reacting poorly, like many natives do, I reached out to dialogue with the raiders. I found that when you talk to people, and try to meet them on their level, there is a lot of common ground. So much, in fact, that I secured my region by refounding it, and then I joined the raiders. To this point, I had never been out of my home region.

Since then I've worked my way up the ranks in various organizations. I am on the Council of the Hawks, and a Lieutenent for The Black Hawks. I am a Lieutenent in The Black Riders. In the OFO, I have comitted my WA nation to Osiris as a guardian of Atef. I have been the only Marshal General and Scribe of the Sekhmet Legion since its inception, and in Balder, I recently was appointed as the Amiral of the Jomsvikings, and Minister of War.

I'm a member of the Deshret here, as well as the Riksdaag in Balder.

But enough about me. The real reason I'm writing tonight is to give you some insight about my leadership philosophies and what I plan to do for Osiris to bring it out of the tailspin that I see us currently in. Note: When I say "I" am going to do something, I mean I will do it, or will delegate the responsibility to someone else.

Philosophy/Plan of Action

I believe that the number one asset of Osiris, and any organization, is the people in it. Without people, what are we doing this for? So when I choose people to run things, or be involved, I don't necesarily want the biggest names, or the "best" people. I want the RIGHT people. If that means I get people who are not well known, but are super excited and motivated to do what needs to be done, even if they need a little guidance, then those are the people I want on my team.

It may be that I'll have to replace people. I'm not afraid to do that. In a game where a month is an eternity, there can be little time wasted. I need people who will do what they say, and will hold true to their word.

That being said, my philosophy is that if you take care of people, they will take care of you. I promise to be a kind, but firm leader. I promise to deal with disputes in a professional manner--normally private. I promise to be approachable by anyone who has feedback for me--positive or negative. And I'll take it under consideration. No one should feel like I am unapproachable: on irc, TG on NationStates, PM on the forum, or Skype, I will make myself available for your feedback on a regular basis, and will respond to you in a timely manner.

Again, our people are the greatest asset we have. And so many nations reside in Osiris, but so few are here.

That's why I've begun to personally invite nations to the forum via telegram. I will also ask my cabinet, and perhaps volunteers, to reach out to nations on a personal level. Mass telegrams are only so effective. One of the major areas of focus will be to look for nations who are active in the region, and send them a personal note, maybe not even talking about the forum for the first telegram. As Pharaoh, I'd like to get to know as many of the people in the region as is feasibly possible. Will this take time? Yes. Will it lead to results? I believe so. Already I have had some positive responses and have even had one person sign up for citizenship and join the military.

Once we get them in the door, we'll need something to keep them here.

On the topic of Culture, my first acts will be to host a Balder-Osiris festival, in honor of the Treaty of the Old Gods being enacted in both regions. In addition, I would like to hold a cultural festival with the Land of Kings and Emperors, as well as with Europeia, also honoroing those treaties. These regions are huge assets to our community, and it would be a shame not to celebrate our friendship with them.

I plan to continue to strengthen relations between Balder and Osiris, and bring these to levels not previously seen in Osiris.

I will also seek out other like-minded regions who wish to enter treaty negotiations with our great region.

I will seek out someone who is interested in leading role plays and establish roleplay once again on our forum.

I will work with Ygfbv to reform the House act, which was good in theory, but difficult to implement in practice.

I believe we need to restore the FA updates, both on our embassy in the NS Forum, and to those fora of our allies with which we have opened embassies. I'd like to begin this with the whole of the Hedjet drafting the update to the greatest extent possible. Perhaps, in time, citizens may show a talent or desire to draft the update, and this will be welcomed with open arms.

I will appoint a new leader of our military. The military has recently begun to recruit for the Legion on the RMB. I will ensure that this will continue, and will personally offer my assistance to training and raising a military of nations native to Osiris.

I will provide direction to the Deshret on laws that should be written and implemented for the benefit of the OFO. In particular, I'd like the Deshret to make a law that would enable the Keeper/Curator to edit laws for formatting issues, legally, without having to repeal and replace the law.

I will look to continue the success we have had in the WA department. We have some of the most talented WA authors in the game right within our borders, and where better to train the next generation than here? While we can't submit our proposals as a group, I'd like to continue to make progress in this area. It's been one of our stronger areas these past few months, and that success needs to continue.

I don't have any particular candidates for any of these positions, but I'm open to suggestions and volunteers for any of them. Ultimately, I'll make the decisions that I feel are best for Osiris, and that's what you'll get with a vote for me.

At this point, I've gone on quite a bit. These are just a handfull of ideas that I have. I'd like for you to give me the chance to turn this ship back around and get us back on track. I've got an uphill climb, and I'll need plenty of support. I know I can take this opportunity to serve Osiris and make the best of it.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in this thread, or by one of the other methods of contacting me:

PM on this forum
IRC I am known as Sev or Severisen and almost always found in #osi on esper.net
Skype: live:severisen
Telegram: Detective Figs or Severisen, both of which are in Osiris.

Thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings. I look forward to serving you, and Osiris, for a long time.

-Severisen

Since the OFO was established in December, Osiris has negotiated five treaties. These regions share roughly the same gameplay alignment and sphere of influence. If you're elected Pharaoh, will you be looking to expand Osiris' alliances beyond this alignment and sphere of influence? How will you do that? What importance do you place on relations with other game-created regions, particularly independent, non-defender regions like The North Pacific and The South Pacific with which we had very strong alliances under the Kemetic Republic?

Aside from the festivals you mentioned, what other kinds of events and activities would you like to see happen in culture?

How will you approach WA voting as Pharaoh?

I'm not sure this is a necessary question at this point, but I'll ask it anyway: If elected Pharaoh, will you continue the persona non grata status of the core members of The Empire?

Thanks, and best of luck!

Cormac, thank you for your questions.

I think the GCRs are unique in their position in this game. I look to reestablish the ties that we had with TNP and TSP in particular. I have gotten to know the delegates of these regions recently and look forward to growing our relations. I will be looking for other UCRs as well, but have none in mind. I would like suggestions.

As mentioned, the house thing needs to be straightened out. I would like to host regular interregional and intraregional games tournaments. I believe we have one of the best IRC channels in the game largely due to Abacathea's Bot, Ra. I want to promote that more. Roleplays are fun for many people, so I want that to make a resurgence.

I would like to introduce a WA voting bill where the Pharaoh is able to vote his/her mind unless a vote is called. I would like for only Osiris WA nations to be able to vote. Personally I would look to the built in game mechanic to guide the votes I take.

Yeah. Empire bad. No welcome here. ;)

That cover it?

How well do you feel that you can adapt to the heavy workload caused by the multiple offices you hold?

Well, currently I am only active in Osiris and Balder. TBH is on hiatus and TBR has taken a back burner for me while I have been immobile in Osiris. I am a great multitasker, and many of my roles overlap anyway. As you saw on Balder's forum, I can be plenty active. I posted 1000+ times in a month there. I look forward to inspiring that kind of activity here.

Thanks for your question.

What do you see as the key driver for activity in the future? Legislative issues? Regional politics? Cultural activities? Military gameplay? Roleplay? Spamming & OOC discussions?

Easy to answer this "a bit of everything", but it's safe to assume the Cabinet won't have time for everything - do you plan to prioritise anything, or just see how it pans out?

The military will be one of my major foci. With the treaty between Osiris and Balder, ISRA will bring attention to our regions and gameplay is what got me interested in this game.

I also would like to see an increase of Spam/OOC chat because that helps create a community.

These two would seem to be the most "bang for your buck" to me. Once they have been established, other areas can follow.

Thanks for your question, NES.

Sev, you've been the only consistently active Scribe of the previous administration excluding Raven's work in Foreign Affairs which he oversaw as Pharaoh. Despite your interest in raiding, you've shown your commitment to Osiris by volunteering to be WA immobile and serving on the Atef. Detective Figs, with all its regional influence, has been entrusted to your care, and not once have you used the power that comes with your regional influence for your own ends. You've always been available during tense times to address the situation head-on. You've been a model for what the future of Osiris can be and a stark contrast to what Osiris has been in the past, which is exactly what we should be looking for in our leadership.

In addition, you've offered a platform that has concrete ideas for moving Osiris forward toward a more active and fun future.

There's nobody I would rather see as Pharaoh at this moment in Osiris' history and nobody I would trust more with that office. I'm glad to give you my vote, and I hope the remaining Councilors of the Deshret who have not yet voted will consider doing the same.
