oh heck i didn't know you posted this! You can defo tell the paint is thick on that one, my usual tendency at this point is to make my paint ridiculously thin tbh. Like, worst case scenario is I have to do a bunch of little layers to get a consistent shade but that's worth it to avoid it looking like it's made out of cheap plastic
I do like the model itself though, no powerful magic sword is ever that powerful or magic if it isn't at least slightly implausibly huge

For this week's Miniature Monday, we have an experimental (and rather blasphemous) scheme - a member of the Death Knights Chaos Warband!



My local hobby store handed out free single-pack easy-build Primaris Marines to advertise 8th Edition, and held a painting competition with them. At the time, they were pushing Primaris Marines as being vastly superior to the old ones in every respect and generally extolling their pre-eminence ad nauseum, so I thought them a perfect (heh) fit for Slaanesh, and the heresy of submitting such a thing to an official painting competition appealed to me. The inspiration for the name and colour scheme was the Dungeons and Dragons monster, of course.
The lore behind the warband was that they were led by a fallen Grey Knight. I came up with a situation where that would be a possibility - A particularly arrogant, violent and secretive Grey Knight was wounded by a servant of Nurgle badly enough to be forced into suspended animation, thus reducing his strength of will. The diseased weapon also damaged the wards beneath his skin, leaving him vulnerable. Finally, their ship's Gellar Field and that Grey Knight's medical chamber in particular were sabotaged by the Changeling right when the Great Rift opened with the ship in the middle, thus exposing him to the entirety of Chaos in that weakened state. To answer why the Changeling was able to hide on a Grey Knights ship, I will direct your attention to that time the Changeling managed to fool the entire Dark Angels upper echelon, including a Librarian actively reading its mind.
That is enough to satisfy me at least, and if people were to object, I would not care. I would much rather play a single controversial Chaos Grey Knight than an army of normal ones. However, that was a few years ago now, and this remains all that has come of the army.

I set myself three challenges with the paint scheme - a metallic appearance, freehand designs, and no use of washes. I wanted to see how well I could do without them as a crutch, and this test model seemed a good opportunity.

I really like the color. It looks really good especially for freehand. I also love the idea of chaos primaris. I hope you won or placed highly in the contest you mentioned. I also appreciate the dnd reference.

Heh, I did not. I think the host was annoyed that three of the forty-odd entrants painted them as Chaos Space Marines.

For this week's Miniature Monday, to mark my nation revamp, I present Eschatos Vagner!




They were a rather ambitious project I started a fair few years ago to be the antagonist for the Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing Game campaign I was running at the time - Eschatos Vagner, a mage who was capable of learning every kind of magic, and was on a quest to do so. The tomes of those magics follow them on floating chains - the ones they currently possess are for each of the standard winds along with Rune Magic, Dark Magic (in the process of learning) and Necromancy - the last of which is prominently placed, as they are clearly in the process of using it. I had a spare Undead Dragon head from a Terrorgheist gift I had purchased for a friend (and they had left with me after utterly failing to put it together in any semblance of proper order, because that kit is awful). Eschatos themself (I still have not decided if they are male or female, I originally leant towards the former but it really does not matter) is a construct of parts from many kits - a head from High Elf Archers, a torso, legs and cape from Dark Elf Black Ark Corsairs, arms from Wood Elf Glade Riders, a sword from Chaos Marauders... etcetera. It was certainly fun to try, and though my painting has certainly improved since, I consider it a bit of a milestone in my progress as a miniature collector.

!!!! i actually *really* love that! It has so much character, especially with all the tomes following them around, it implies their character super well. I do also quite like the effect you got with the undead dragon, the whole weathered skull-ish effect isn't one i've nearly gotten around to figuring out yet

Ooh. I like. The dragon is a fantastic touch to the piece. I'm a tad confused on why the books are chained but they look fantastic. The figure themself looks good, I especially like the sword with arcane blue runes.

For this week's Miniature Monday, we have my Vostroyan Skitarii Ranger Kill Team!



I built and painted them in a weekend for a Shadow War: Armageddon campaign at my local store. I did very well in that campaign in terms of victories, but the victory condition was acquiring 'fuel points', which I was not as interested in, as hoarding them meant losing access to some of the game features. As I recall, I placed 2nd or 3rd. Most of that was thanks to the two snipers, as after a few games, I had a brutally unfair combination with them. Both snipers had +1 to hit, re-rolling all misses, re-rolling injury rolls, -1 to enemy cover, ignoring one particular enemy's cover thanks to the Omnispex-user next to them, and another +1 to hit if they needed it (which would give the enemy a 6+ invulnerable save though). Plus they had pretty much the longest-range weapons in the game, with an extra range upgrade on them, as well as being (as I recall) the most powerful sniper rifles in the game. Towards the end of the campaign, I handily won a 2 on 1 game without taking any casualties. As for why it was 2 on 1... I was not the only person who found my team brutally unfair.
I tried to paint them with Vostroyans in mind, bronze and brass rather than steel, but rather than the red of their Imperial Guard regiments, I decided to paint their cloth the bone/khaki-esque of their tanks. To fit with the urban combat theme, I decided to give them camouflage cloaks.
