Resignation

Post by Cormac »

To clarify, I'm not blaming anyone else for my own actions. I'm explaining why I took those actions, which was to give the Osiran community what it wanted -- a direction for the raider-imperialist path that the community has chosen. As I already said, I did believe those actions were what was best for Osiris at the time in light of what the community wanted Osiris to be.

The area of disagreement that I can no longer support is that chosen path. I don't think it's in Osiris' interests to be an imperialist region, or indeed in any other GCR's interests, and perhaps not in the interests of any region besides those that are already established imperialist regions. The reason for this is because the established imperialist regions don't treat new imperialist regions as equals or as allies, but as competitors whose inferiority must be demonstrated or as colonies whose obedience must be guaranteed.

I'm not blaming anyone else for declaration of war against Lazarus, though many people -- yourself included, NES -- were enthusiastically in favor of it, and twelve people voted for it without any coercion or even campaigning on my part. I'm certainly not blaming anyone else for the termination of relations with regions that attended the Regional Sovereignty Conference.

What I'm blaming imperialist regions for is the way Osiris has been treated since it decided to pursue this raider-imperialist path. Imperialists have never treated Osiris as an equal or an ally, but rather as their pawn and trophy. They have sought to dictate with whom we can and can't agree to non-aggression, with whom we can and can't agree to mutual defense, with whom we can and can't engage in hostility, and even to whom we can and can't give credit for our own military operations. Meanwhile, they have left us out of important interregional events and provided lame excuses for our exclusion. We are, essentially, Lazarus before the PRL. We are the trophy on the imperialist shelf, and Balder is the region that imperialists take seriously as an equal and an ally. All Osiris is, to the imperialist sphere, is a slightly more active and significantly more unruly replacement for what Lazarus once was to them before the imperialists of the NPO decided they didn't want to share their sandbox anymore.

Regardless, I have no illusions that Osiris' path will change. I'm speaking my mind as an individual after months of holding this back and I'm well aware that it won't have any actual effect. As a result of my mistakes for over a year, Osiris will remain under the thumb of imperialists for the foreseeable future. I've accepted that as reality, I'm aware there's nothing I can do to change it (having already tried) -- but I'm not going to stick around for it, and I'm certainly not going to continue advancing it as Pharaoh.

Leading any big region is difficult, especially if it is one with freedom of discussion and independent thought like Osiris. You have challenges almost daily, from mere inactivity of people in charge of things to dealing with detractors both inside and abroad. It is a truly difficult task to deal with, and claims many a good politician in their efforts to serve their region.

I am sure that you will find something else to do with your time in NationStates, and look forward to our occasional interactions where you praise my voice. :P

Just briefly, on the matter of the conference in Europeia - it's pretty much my fault, and I apologise for that. This week has been ridiculously busy in RL, and I have been phoning it in (literally; almost all of my NSing has been done in brief patches on my phone) for the past several days, leading to a lack of presence when some decisions were made, and a direct failure by me to provide communication with Osiris. I shall seek to rectify this now that there is some time off work, and any relevant figures here are quite welcome to contact me.

Osiris has been growing in internal strength and regional solidarity over the past year, from Venico's tenure onwards, and I look forward to seeing who is raised up as the next Pharaoh, and working with them.

No, apparently it is "imperialists" fault because they just want Osiris to be a pawn and trophy. Or something.

It's all imperialists fault basically. Maybe we should just ban them all - and join the FRA - and then everything will be brilliant. ie. Lazarus Mk2. Where the Dictator just bans whoever he wants, the region is inexorably tied to defender paymasters, and the People have no say in anything. Yes, that is "freedom" from imperialism.

The fact is that nearly all of our policies over the past 2 months have been designed and pursued either specifically by Cormac such as cutting relations with regions that attended the RSC, or by a majority of Osiris's Sovereign Parliament on the advice of the entire Osiran leadership, such as the Lazarus war. Not by the invisible hand of "imperialists".

The notion that "imperialists" are to blame for our Foreign Policy situation is entirely false. Osiris has done almost exactly what Cormac has wanted since he has been Pharaoh. Except when a wide section of the region disagreed with the direction he was taking, so he chose another. Again, he chose the direction, not "imperialists". He may have felt he had no choice, but that was a consequence of a wide segment of the region being of a raider alignment, not because of external instructions from imperialists.

Imperialists have had very little or no influence in Osiris, indeed myself, a leading imperialist apparently, have been removed from Government for practically his entire term. I have zero influence in Osiris. To then turn around and blame imperialists for the situation we're in, and advocate purging them as a solution is totally absurd.

Imperialism is finished in Osiris. I have every confidence ISRA will follow it shortly. Not because Imperialists control Osiris and want to end it. But because they never controlled the direction of Osiris, and the name of Imperialism here has been irrecoverably damaged by the flawed policies pursued over the past 2 months by the Cormac administration. Maybe that's a good thing for Osiris. Maybe not. We'll never know.

I believe - given the opportunity, that Osiran politicians will step up to the Plate and the challenge of leading the region forwards. The fact is, we have so many such people capable of doing that. And we still have a strong community. Credit where it is due, Cormac is ultimately as responsible for retaining the integrity, independence and viability of this community - as he is its flawed foreign policy.

Ultimately, like I said before, we can fix foreign affairs. Rebuilding a community is a lot harder than adjusting foreign policies. I agree with him our current trajectory is no good. But I don't think our situation is anywhere near as disastrous as Cormac says. He of all people should know how easy it is to fix the fallout from ones past actions. Though perhaps it would be impossible for even him to do so personally this time.

It must be said that despite the mistakes you listed, Cormac, you were the greatest Pharaoh that the OFO has yet had. May you know happiness, wherever you wind up.

Hey NES, you know what the best part of not being Pharaoh anymore is? I don't have to quietly put up with your shit. Go to hell.

Oh, and you know what the best part of not being Pharaoh anymore but still being in the Delegacy is?
