Syl for Pharaoh - Working for Osiris

Post by Ridersyl »

Osiris will live up to its name.

The Platform for a Certain Syl

_____
Thank you, first of all, for deciding to read my platform. I am sure to be surrounded by other candidates with more experience in running for political positions. As soon as I arrived here 12 months ago, I joined a military-oriented region with a terrible reputation. Through hard work and dedication, I became well-respected by both my comrades-in-arms and my rivals across the field. Even the victims of my actions spoke to me with kindness and compassion, and I matched them with the same. All along the way, I broke military records and became a decorated soldier, while learning the power of a people working as one.

The sole reason I only have military prowess in my background is because that is what I dedicated myself to, and excellent results were had. The only time I couldn't dedicate myself to that, was when I had to dedicate myself to defeating stage three cancer. Excellent results were had there too.

On a personal level, I will give the region my strong character and attitude, as well as my ability to learn quick and churn out results. On a professional level, I will give the region my experience with structured organization and charisma.

My goal for Osiris is to spend every minute of my term, obsessively, tirelessly working to boost Osiris in all possible areas. I want to help with that aspired goal, the one of all Pharaohs before me and after me, as well as every citizen that has joined. A strong, popular, reknowned, healthy Osiris. Regional games, activities, and culture that keep people coming back every day and staying up late because they can't get enough. Foreign relations with every respectable GCR and UCR that exists in the game, so long as it isn't an unhealthy one. A media outlet that puts out so many stories and opinion pieces, it'll make TRR's media department feel undermanned.

As the Pharaoh of Osiris, I will work endlessly with everyone from my Vizier and Cabinet members, to our Scribes, to the smallest of active citizens. I will encourage both new and old faces of the region to find new ways to participate, and that will stop at encouragement.

Now, after saying all of this, I understand that in all this strong talk of results and work, it may sound like I would want to turn the citizens of our region into slave labor. I will only encourage others to work towards this common goal, and set up a structured environment so that the OFO can function with the greatest effeciency to achieve this goal. I will not force anyone into doing this with me. If I am the only one spending my days and nights coming up with ideas and taking action to help spur the region into becoming the greatest GCR in NationStates, then so be it... but I very much doubt that I will be alone in my efforts. I have great faith in all of you, and that you will join the Pharaoh of Osiris in achieving their goals.

Today, here and now, I have but one request. Soon, the votes will be open, and you will all help hold the pen that will write the next chapter of Osiris' history. My request is that as you write that next chapter, you place me as the Pharaoh. I will not let us down.

Our media outlet could do an NS Sports piece on how nothing in that part of NS can compare to the true story of Ty Cobb.
And you could write it. ^_^

I plan on allowing 'Community Entries' for our region's media outlet, which would of course have to be checked by an editor and then approved for publish.

If you've seen my questions in other candidate threads, you know the drill: I'm asking these admittedly tough questions because I think you have a real chance and I'm considering voting for you. They're not personally motivated nor are they meant to be attacks.

1. As far as I know, you don't have any executive experience in any other region. What prepares you for the chief executive office of Osiris?

2. Can you provide a bit more detail on the how of your plans (which all sound good!)? Specifically, I would like to hear some concrete ideas for culture and increasing internal regional activity, and I would like to know what your plans are for external affairs -- both FA and military -- in more detail.

3. The Black Riders, of which you're a member, have at least twice participated in coup d'etat attempts againt Osiris, albeit the Kemetic Republic of Osiris rather than the Osiris Fraternal Order and well before your time in NationStates. You are a raider and Osiris is not a raider region, though the OFO has certainly been raider-friendly and the Legion has primarily raided. Nonetheless, we don't technically fall under raider unity. Long story short: Why can we trust you not to overthrow this government in a coup d'etat?

Best of luck!

I know what I am. I'm the bright-eyed, inexperienced candidate. Tough questions crush guys like me, but I also understand they can strengthen the candidates' positions even further.

1. As far as I know, you don't have any executive experience in any other region. What prepares you for the chief executive office of Osiris?

The start to the answer may sound like a dodge, but I assure you, it's not. When I was 3 years old, my father sat me in front of a computer, because as a young autistic kid, it was tough to find toys I would stay interested in and I kept watching him on the computer instead. It wasn't a week later that I taught my own adult father how to cut and paste a file in Windows. At the age of 9, I found out that Call of Duty 1 had a program that could make shapes that you could battle on. Later that year I was doing level design for its multiplayer community. At the age of 11, I downloaded a Pokemon battle program that allowed you to host a server, with a blank box that you could write VisualBasic code in. I started with basic code, and by the age of 12, I had 4000 lines of code in my server that 20-year-old programmers were telling me they were impressed with. At the age of 16, I was writing user-submitted sports posts on a network-hosted sports blog. Within a year, I was given three job offers and one of the team's best players read my article and tweeted about it. My life's experience with heading into things with no experience and showing an ability to do awesome things. That is what prepares me for the chief executive office of Osiris.

2. Can you provide a bit more detail on the how of your plans (which all sound good!)? Specifically, I would like to hear some concrete ideas for culture and increasing internal regional activity, and I would like to know what your plans are for external affairs -- both FA and military -- in more detail.

The first step is setting up a structured system of communications with each member of my Cabinet, in order to explore ideas and ensure tasks are remembered. The structured system is the first concrete idea. I feel like more order in the process can only help in keeping things going smoothly for the OFO, and that will trickle down the rest of the region.

- Culture

As a standalone, concrete idea, I'll be encouraging many more simple, easy-to-participate cultural activities that include many of the populace. Some of the activities may even bypass the forums until they conclude, using methods such as a email account that takes in submissions, or a puppet account that is telegrammed submissions (TG's would have to archived quickly so entries are not lost). The simple fact is, members of the region may not want to join the forum, but still want something fun to do. Making our cultural activities accessible to them should definitely increase activity in that area.

Another idea I had was RMB Spam Games. A poll will be started asking members of the region which game they would want to play on the RMB. This poll would include a 'Pass/None' sort of option, naturally. The games would last for a designated amount of pages, and then the 'Winner' would get their nation name on the WFE until the next RMB Spam Game had started.

Having interregional contests and games is also an idea, but that's dependent on how well my ideas pan out in the External Affairs part of this answer.

- Internal Regional Activity

To spur activity in the forums... The Temple of Hathor would have a pinned chat that I would start, called 'The Osiris Open Topic'. It will be a topic that can hold any discussion that is not covered by a real topic. Then nearly every sub-forum, except where it would be highly impractical, would have a pinned thread called (_____'s Open Topic). I would start each thread and it would be pinned, being a topic that can hold discussions related to each Temple that are not covered by a real topic. Even through the most inactive days of the OFO in recent memory, the IRC chat stayed active because it was an 'Open Topic', in essence. Our forum needs something similar, and the Temple of Hathor itself has not sufficed.

- External Affairs.

My main agenda is that I am looking to help boost the activity, while also watching out for anything that harms the health of Osiris. I can't help but look at a couple of UCR's and see their absolutely ridiculous levels of activity. Having diplomatic relations with them would surely benefit us, so long as said relations do not threaten the health of our region. I will let any past wrongs stay where they belong, in the past, and look to re-establish relations with any GCR's that allow it... Again, as long as they are active and are not a toxic ally.

My approach will be one of forgiveness, peace, unification, activity, and health.
That being said, if there is a region that repeatedly seeks to bring harm our well-being... They will not enjoy my other stance. As I have said and you have mentioned, I am a raider. I know very well how the military works in this game.

- Military

Recruit the people that have no interest in other parts of the game, or are tired of those parts of the game, into the Sekhmet Legion. Ensure our training programs are easy to follow, and go a step further in questioning recruits about how their current technology is (mouse, keyboard, computer, internet, and other things that could hurt or stop them in the field). Continuously take note of military players leaving other organizations, and try to grab them before other organizations or regions do. Use the fact they are players in the army of a storied, cultured, and extremely large region to keep them, or attract them. Once we have a good military, then if any region threatens the stability and health of Osiris and has the actual ability to back up that threat, we will attempt diplomatic methods, and if those fail, call a vote on whether to declare war. I may be a ruthless raider, but charging everyone that calls us a stick in the mud with a wooden shield and a rubber sword isn't going to work, and I know that.

On top of all that, the structured system will make sure that we are constantly bouncing ideas around on how to boost Osiris, so during my term, this is not all that will be implemented. Many minds can achieve many things.

As you said, both of those coup attempts were before my time here in NationStates. The OFO's raider-friendly attitude is why I became a citizen here in the first place, as well as the awesomeness of the IRC channel, of course. To the question, I can give you three reasons I won't coup Osiris.

One, I pride myself on the friends I have made all over the game, and attempting a coup here would probably ruin that for me. That would be horrible for me.

Two, From what I understand about coup d'etats, it's a personal legacy thing. You know what? I'd rather have the legacy of bringing Osiris back from one of, if not the worst period of inactivity in its existence, rather than have the legacy of attempting yet another Osiris coup.

Three, if I ever want to coup a GCR, it won't be Osiris or TEP because... I just can't do it.

Thanks for the questions, Cormac. Whomever you vote for when that period starts, I'm glad you're here to give it.

Syl, I nominated you on a whim, and so far your responses to this has been... surprising isn't the right word. Pleasantly unexpected.

What do you feel are your strengths as a candidate?

What are your weaknesses?

Thank you, Tomb! I hear from Andrew you are excellent in Home Affairs, FYI. I'm very interested in that concept.

To Sev... I have been surprising people in NationStates since my arrival. I'm glad that I am continuing to do so. Also, one of my secret goals in NS has been to be the leader of a region (founder or otherwise) and build it up immensely, so that's why my response is so heavy. As for your questions...

- As much as I consider one's strengths to be what others say they are, I'll go ahead and answer. My strengths are my background in organization and efficiency, my strong will, my open-mindedness, and my military experience.

- My weaknesses would have to be inexperience in the realm of politics and holding an executive office, as well as my status as a Black Rider.
