Greetings Osiris.

This month we are doing an Alien Design Competition.

The purpose of the competition is to design a completely new alien. You can include as much or as little detail as you want, but you can include the biology, technology, culture, and physical description of the alien. If they have any unique ideologies or morals, or anything else you feel may be relevant. I have in mind that this will be a primarily written event, but I also see no reason why a submission could also be a sketch or other piece of artwork.

Submissions will end on August 31st.

Race Name: the Humans of Eden

Species: Homo Sapiens

Description: though known to themselves simply as humans and biologically indistinct from the surviving humans on Earth, the people present on the planet of Astvaan IV (known among the locals as Eden) are societally and culturally unique among all other colonies.

They descend from a evangelist generation ship sent out as one of humanity's first extrasolar expeditions. These colonists were fervently faithful, cursing the planet of their descent for its worldliness and vanity, and intended to create a luddite civilisation on a new plane centred exclusively upon their values and reality. The doctrine of the original sin took a unique character among this sect, now referring to the circumstances of humanity's ascension on Earth that left it rife with alternative religions and worldviews that ran counter to the true will of god; it was thought that moving away from Earth to an isolated location could allow a small band to establish a memetically pure society, free of alternative dogma and the original sin.

The travel was fraught with incident, but it ultimately made land upon the surface of Eden without trouble, and was subsequently dismantled and its parts buried deep beneath the earth to mark the beginning of a sanctified civilisation. Most of the surface of Eden is now cultivated by an agrarian civilisation, which has now developed its own language and customs.

The first generation on Eden was near utterly silent. They bore innumerable memes from Earth that might unconsciously resurface in their speech or mannerisms, and so chose to pass information to their children with extreme care such that they may be the first of a line of utterly sanctified humans.

To the eternal mourning of the humans of Eden, not all present on the generation ship were utterly pure. The news of such a grand colonisation effort being headed by a radical fundamentalist sect of Christianity attracted social outcry among the apostates of Earth, some of whom successfully infiltrated the chosen few to board the ship to subvert the teachings that would ultimately make it to Eden. These alternative dogmas have surfaced throughout the planet in many forms including narratives derived from secular humanists, religious pluralists, alternative sects of Christianity, and words from a wide range of other groups intent on making their voices heard in the history of the planet.

The many churches of Eden have responded to these many impurities by stratifying society between the pure, who have never once heard of any dogma or narrative besides that which is according to the doctrines and scripture of god, and the impure who may still do god's work but must spare words with the pure to ensure their memetic purity. The pure are raised in isolated chapels and mountain retreats to be treated as the first generation treated their children, whereas the vast majority of the population is regarded as impure.

Persecution of heinous unbelievers has occurred but most subversion is silent and obscure; the impure rarely know that their customs, folklore, habits or ethics are apart from gods will, as very few pure members of the clergy deign to risk learning the details of impurities for fear that it may sully their minds. This silent aversion to self moderation among the impure has lead to a gradual shift of their cultural and religious values; the present popular Christianity of Eden would be queer and unrecognizable to the original colonists, whether by its own evolution or by subtle influences from resurfaced texts of other earthly traditions, whereas the Christianity of the isolated chapels and shrines has taken on an inhuman aspect.

Perhaps given many centuries the religious and societal landscape of Eden is due for a monumentous overhaul.

The Cretorians:

The Cretorians live on free roaming planet that is detached from from a host star, though has internal planetary thermals, which is how the planet is able to sustain life. The Cretorians have ruined the flora and fauna of their host planet and have recently began the search for planets around their own solar system to colonize.

The Cretorians are a caste specific species with the largest being called Hive Units and are tubular, root looking creatures, that stand on three legs, with golden eyes that ring around the body. The Central Units do not possess have any arms, and in order to feed themselves, the Hive Unit produces what are called Bee Units. Bee Units are produced in the internal organs of the Hive Unit, and when mature they emerge from the top oral orifice to assist in the basic needs of the Hive Unit. Directly connected via a hive-mind structure, Bee Unites produce, harvest, and deliver food to the Hive Unit. In space travel, the Hive Unit halts the production of Bee Units, and must rely on it's own motor-skills, which is taxing for the hive Unit.

Bee and Drone unites look much like that of the Hive Unit, only they have wing-like flaps that allow them to hover and fly about. Before the Central Unit can produce Bee Units that help the Hive Unit live and thrive, the Central Unit must have had two or more other nearby Central Units swap "Waks". Waks is a oily black liquid that the Central Unit produces solely to swap it via Drone Units with other Hive Units. Drone Units are the very very "helper" units that the Hive Unit creates, whos only task is the collect waks and transport it to other Central Units, while picking up and delivering waks back to it's home Hive Unit. Creating the waks and the Drone Units are taxing on the Hive Unit, so a successful swap of waks is vital for the livelihood of the Hive Unit. Without this swapping of waks, the Hive Unit can't acquire the DNA-codes necessary in creating Bee Units.

While given the names "Hive", "Drone", and "Bee" - Cretorians do not bare any physical resemblance to Earth-bees. However their caste-system and the way the structure of their life cycle is, is akin to that of many Earth-like eusocial insects ( and some mammals ), in this case stemming influence for their names from bees.

The Solarfish is a species of spacefaring organisms that survive entirely on solar radiation. They have no mouths, instead absorbing light through their fins and sails, which can grow to five times their usual size when grazing. The creatures themselves can be anywhere from a metre to a kilometre in length, though the latter is only possible with a consistent glut of solar energy, such as from a star on the verge of going nova. They can usually be found orbiting stars, though there have been cases of them discovered in deep space. In such cases, they have entered a cryogenic dormancy that can last for eons. Then, when they feel the light of a sun, they awaken just enough to propel themselves in its direction with the slightest movement, a muscle flex that runs down their forms and ends in the ejection of frozen blood from their tails. Each Solarfish is born pregnant, and give birth during times of increased activity from the stars they orbit.
